Ask Your Boating Question?
What Should a First Time Boater be Concerned About?Question?Q: Hi! An interesting situation has come up. We love the water, both the Gulf and the Atlantic Ocean. So we are getting a boat next month in April. Without much experience, what do you think are the keys for a novice Florida boater? That is it in a nutshell. Thanks again. Della Vanwormer (Tampa Florida) Answer!A: That is a good one to ponder. We have all been a new boater and less experienced at some point. I think it all comes down being slow and careful, using a good sense of judgment. Any experienced boater will tell you that bay and ocean waters can be an unfriendly environment if you don't recognize potential risks and avoid them. The online boating safety courses are free and would be worth the 3 to 6 hours it would take to get a nice overview. These courses have a strong focus on risk management, and they will help you recognize issues before they escalate. A good and easy boating book read is "Boating for Dummies". Take if easy out on the water. Just like learning to drive a car, build your skill in quiet areas. In the beginning, do not take your boat out to Boca Grande Pass! Avoid the boating traffic as you build you knowledge of the local waters above and below the surface. Your Florida boating hobby is worth your time and safety. That is my take on this. It is nice to gain and share experiences.
